I colori del buio

The photography exhibition, curated by the Geographic Association La Venta in collaboration with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Pavia, with the support of the National Plan for Scientific Degrees – Geology Project, and under the patronage of the Italian Speleological Society, the Italian Geographic Society, and Fondazione Cariplo, aims to share the unique world of caves—a realm where space, sounds, smells, and time exist in a dimension that is entirely different from the surface world.

The exhibition will showcase large-format, backlit photographic panels, accompanied by videos, exploration equipment, objects, and books that will immerse visitors in extraordinary and unexpected environments. The Geographic Association La Venta has been conducting explorations and research in these environments for over 30 years, leading to significant scientific discoveries. From the remote, ancient caves of Venezuela’s tepuis to the fleeting yet captivating glacial cavities, whose study is crucial to understanding ongoing climate change; from high-altitude abysses in Uzbekistan to salt-carved tunnels in Iran and Chile—each photograph narrates the essence of speleological research.

What mysteries lie beneath the dense Asian and American rainforests? What does it mean to descend into the toxic depths of Arabian abysses, where exploration pushes human limits? What forms of life exist in these depths? The exhibition seeks to answer these questions, revealing unknown life forms shaping the interior of mountains, as well as traces of ancient human life, hidden and suspended in time within caves. Among the images is the breathtaking Giant Crystal Cave, captured during an expedition that tested the physical and technological limits of speleologists, who faced infernal heat to uncover the planet’s most extraordinary underground landscape.

In addition to the exhibition, there will be conferences led by explorers from La Venta. On Tuesday, April 15, at 6 PM at Kosmos, “The Lost World” will showcase the explorations and studies conducted in the tepui caves—some of the oldest quartzite mountains on Earth. Speakers include Francesco Sauro, geologist at the University of Padua and president of La Venta, and Martina Cappelletti, microbiology professor at the University of Bologna. On Friday, May 23, at 6 PM, also at Kosmos, there will be a session titled “The Last Ice” with Francesco Sauro and glaciologist Alessio Romeo. Astronaut Luca Parmitano will join remotely to discuss the connection between caves and outer space—two seemingly distant but closely linked worlds.

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, Kosmos will offer family activities, guided tours for groups and schools, and, upon request, visiting schools will have the opportunity to attend short seminars on topics related to the exhibition, in collaboration with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Pavia.

The exhibition “Colors of Darkness: Exploring the Underground Planet” will be open from March 20 to August 31, 2025, during Kosmos’ opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last entry at 5:30 PM).

It will be closed on Easter Day, May 1, and August 15. Access to the exhibition is included with the museum admission ticket. For those visiting only the exhibition, the entrance fee is €4.

Linea Confinaria

Kosmos, the Natural History Museum of the University of Pavia presents the exhibition “Linea Confinaria” by Mariano Pieroni, an eclectic polymaterial artist.
Pieroni exhibits to the public the collection of “Plasticoni”, realistic animals made with waste materials, rejected as no longer usable or aesthetically unpleasant.

Beyond the charm of these objects, some of which are unrealistically out of scale, Pieroni’s art aims to be a provocation and, at the same time, a question about the contemporary world, in particular about the sustainability of production and consumption practices in which we are all, more or less consciously, involved.

“Linea Confinaria” transforms the constituent material of the landfill into emblematic objects, underlining in an original way the precariousness of the existence of some animals at risk of extinction, victims of a system in which the boundary between the natural world and the landfill no longer exists: the landfill is now everywhere, it lives among us.

The LINEA CONFINARIA exhibition will be open from 18 October 2024 to 23 May 2025 during Kosmos opening hours, from Tuesday to Sunday 10.00-18.00 (last admission 17.30). Closed on 25 December, 20 April, 1 May.
Access to the exhibition is included in the Museum entrance ticket. Exhibition only 4 euros.

Piante Guerriere

Why does an orchid want to look like an insect?
Why did a plant learn to count?
Why does a magnificent flower smell like rotting flesh?

These and many other curious questions will be answered in the new temporary exhibition at Kosmos, the Natural History Museum of the University of Pavia, featuring some plants that do everything you wouldn’t expect from a plant, fighting like “warriors” for their own survival.
The exhibition, which presents some of the most surprising plants in the world in their habitat, matched by large photographic panels and videos that reveal their lesser-known aspects, is curated by naturalists Raffaella Fiore and Francesco Tomasinelli, in collaboration with the Orto Botanico Città Studi dell’Università di Milano and by the Orto Botanico dell’Università di Pavia.
What fascinates us about these ‘warrior’ plants? Certainly their ability, in some cases, to attack and eat insects, as some animals do, but also their ability to propagate in completely unexpected ways, with seeds similar to gliders or helicopters, or thanks to hooks that attach themselves to the fur of mammals.

The exhibition Piante guerriere. Journey among plants that believe they are animals will be open from 28 September 2024 to 2 March 2025 during Kosmos opening hours, from Tuesday to Sunday 10.00-18.00 (last admission 17.30). Closed on 25 December. Access to the exhibition is included in the entrance ticket to the Museum.
Exhibition only 4 euros.

HANDIMALS

Kosmos presents the handimals exhibition in the renovated spaces on the first floor Handimals. Le mani dipinte di Guido Daniele. 42 works, including paintings and photographic prints, created by the artist who has dedicated himself to painting hands for over twenty years to recreate animal features with extreme realism and chromatic liveliness. The exhibition celebrates the beauty of nature and, at the same time, invites us to reflect on its fragility, each creation, which requires hours of talented and patient work, is then photographed and destroyed. The photographic image, therefore, remains the only testimony of the work, as an allusion to the vulnerability of life and the animal species portrayed. On display there will be astonishing eagles and elephants, horses and pandas, butterflies and dogs, all masterfully reproduced with brushes and colors on hands of all kinds. Before arriving at Kosmos, Guido Daniele’s works were exhibited in galleries, museums and cultural institutions all over the world. The artist wanted to dedicate the Pavia stage of the exhibition to Jane Goodall for her 90th birthday, recently celebrated.
